Wow, what a comprehensive article! I've been looking for more information on a food cleanse, this was great! I tried the Master Cleanse diet (lemon, maple syrup, cayenne) and had a really hard time, now I realize it was a healing crisis. I'm going to approach my next cleanse with this useful information, thank you!

I am wondering if there are any published studies quantifying the benefits of cleansing? Also are there any studies of whether cleansing effects the effect and absorption of various medications?
Lastly have any studies compared the effects of less severe levels of restriction on similarly healthy individuals? In other words, if you 1/2 fast or 3/4 fast for the same period as a full fast what is the ratio of fasting input to yield provided that you maintain a healthy diet at all times? It is fairly common knowledge among nutritionists nowadays that staged periods of calorie restriction - usually at least one week in length - are beneficial combined with proper exercise and sleep, but I am worried that "shock fasting" could cause harm for some individuals, especially if an unhealthy diet was starving them of essential nutrients before the fast started.

I know you usually have to pay to read scientific studies but if anyone in the research community has access I would really like to know how much research is out there.

Lastly, the author forgets the most important part of cleansing and fasting is proper exercise and rest. The process could make it harder to do either properly since it will affect your energy and mood.

This is an excellent and complete article. I wanted you to consider a different view very clearly and unwaveringly taught by Dr. Brian Clement of the Hippocrates Health Institute of which I am a Certified Health Educator.

He teaches that if we fast once per week the benefits are significant when you realize that over a 7 year period you are giving the digestive system a rest that equates to 1 year. Do the math. He has taught this for over 30 years and credits this practice with substantial anti-aging and other health benefits.

In any case, I honor you for investing your life in educating people about the benefits of a raw food lifestyle.

Keep up the great work!
